The House of the Future is already here. Well, almost. These four future home features are only the tip of the iceberg of whats to come in real estate technology.
We already have robots who sweep and wash our floors, lighting systems that can be controlled from our smart phones and even apps to manage out power consumption. Here are a few features North American builders are starting to integrate into the homes of the future.
Facial Recognition Home Security
While facial recognition isn’t something new, its application into the home security system has yet to take hold. Prices for this technology have come down drastically over the years and now some companies are developing amazing systems that can be used with mobile devices and/or cameras placed in and out of the home. A camera at the door could quickly call out the names of your friends and family as they approach or alert you of a stranger. Strangers faces could be scanned against a criminal database instantly. Awkward if you find out that one of your friends or family has been keeping a dark secret from you.
Digital Backplash

Imagine your kitchen back-splash as one continuous touchscreen digital display that can play movies, pictures and even a live camera feed of your security system. Instead of a tiled back-splash, these touchscreen displays, similar to flat screen televisions would transform your kitchen into an all-around media centre. Imagine telling your back-splash to pull up a recipe while your hands are busy preparing a meal.
Smart Toilets
The toilet as we know it today has seen very little change in terms of its functionality. Not so if you've been to Japan in the past decade. Buttons, lights and sounds, these toilets are downright futuristic! These toilets don’t just double as a bidet to wash away your dirty work, but also have dryers to warmly dry your butt so you never even have to reach for the toilet paper! Want a lid that goes up and down on its own? Heated seats? Self-flushing? How about a toilet that cleans itself with an antibacterial coating when you stand up?
While these toilets have been around for some time overseas, a new generation is on its way which will perform a urine analysis to screen for diabetes, drug use and pregnancy, plus your #2 will be used to detect colon cancer! They will even help you create a diet and give you a workout plan!
Smart Locks
Smartphone enabled locks are a must for a fully automated home. Imagine your door unlocking automatically as you approach it, or a feature that even opens it for you as you get close. Did you forget to give a relative a key while you were on vacation? No problem… now you can send them a digital key that can even expire at a pre-set date and time! Each person who enters will have their own digital access code which can be used to monitor whose coming and going. Now you can know when your house keeper arrives and leaves.
